Brodie's Movie Review: Stay Alive

Last night I went and saw a movie called “Stay Alive” and before I went in I was quite sceptical about the story line and lack of any Hollywood stars (It was a B grade horror film). There we a handful of faces I recognised (from many other B grade films) but the only person who may have had any drawing power was Frankie Muniz from Malcolm in the Middle and even then it’s not because of his classy acting skills.

The move itself is about this countess who used to torture and kill people back in the 17th century. Apparently this countess was a real person (Elizabeth something), I have to look into that because it would be an interesting read. This countess manages to come back and kill people through a video game. The idea is, if you die in the game you die in real life. The nerd inside me is what drew me to seeing this flick and even though the storyline seems completely mental it was a very entertaining film. One of the highlights for me was some of the dialogue (the use of the word “Newb” was a stand out) and some of the T-shirts the cast wear, one guys was wearing a shirt saying “w00t”… gold!

The “in-game” footage was also entertaining and reminded me of my old gamer days. It’s inspired me to upgrade my PC and work on getting broadband at my house now that I have my fancy new job and pay rise. Another plus for the film was the use of silence in some of the suspenseful parts of the film. Generally for me the score is what really completes a movie 9 times out of 10. The use of silence was a good idea sadly they didn’t pull it off to well but I appreciated something different and had it worked it would have been great.

It’s worth a look when it comes out on to DVD and I’d probably even buy it if there were decent special features to seal the deal. Brodie’s movie rating: 7 hookers out of 10.
