Mammal @ Bang
This weekend I did something I haven’t done in a long while and that was to go to a gig essentially by myself. As usual I knew some people there, but I wouldn’t say I’m close friends with them or anything like that, but I just couldn’t wait any longer to see this band. In the end, the band was well worth the wait, and I may have pee’d a little with excitement.
For what seems like a lifetime now I’ve been searching for a band to replace Full Scale since they split up, but now it’s dawned on me that I never will. There are many local/Australian bands around that I still love (Karnivool and Seven especially) but nothing comes close to the power and emotion I felt when listening to Full Scales music. I have so much love and respect for this band and what they went through trying to make it “big” and getting completely screwed over by their record label. I just can’t explain what their music means to me, at their final show roughly 8 months back I even felt like crying, it was an emotional evening for many people. I’m actually considering getting a tattoo with their symbol and “respect” or something like that in the near future.
But back on topic, the band I went to see is called Mammal and they basically rocked my man-gina to the brink of eruption. The reason why I have been so excited about this band is because it has the lead singer from my favourite band in the world (Full Scale… duh!) fronting it. The man himself is Ezekiel Ox and both his stage presence and vocals are amazing, the man truly has it all. Not to forget about the rest of the band however their music is quite powerful, tight and hard hitting. I have no doubt that they will make it big in the Melbourne music scene. But as usual Zekes stage antics left the punters in awe. One of the many highlights was the stage dive of a set of amps stacked roughly 8 to 10 feet high into a group of about 10 or so males, it was truly awesome. I captured the footage on my phone and I’ll try and put it on the net at some point.
I also wanted to go to this gig because I wanted to see what Bang was like, in my honest opinion it blew. It’s held every Saturday at the Royal Melbourne Hotel and it’s ran by the same people who run Next every Thursday at the Colonial Hotel so I was expecting that it would be as good (if not better) than Next. I was very disappointed with my visit to Bang, although the venue was quite cool, I think it was an old dungeon or jail or something (correct me if I’m wrong) but that’s all it has going for it. The “metal” room was hella empty and there was another “room” (it was just a long hallway in between the two other rooms) which was also fairly boring with music that didn’t really interest me so I was very disappointed with Bang, maybe it’s just because I expected to much? In my opinion Next is the greatest place on the planet, for what ever reason it is I just love it there.
I strongly urge you to check out Mammal (http://www.myspace.com/mammaltheband) when you can they are worth every penny.

Yeah, I agree, Next is truly great. Its not something I would have thought to do myself but its a good place. Kudos :P Mann I still remember the first time we all went there, and Leigh was busting for a piss...and then we went to BIMBOS.
